The Indian Railways has recently revised its advance ticket booking rules, reducing the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) from 120 days to 60 days effective November 1, 2024. This change was implemented to address several issues related to ticket cancellations and the phenomenon of “no-shows,” where passengers fail to cancel their tickets or do not show up for their journeys.
Prior to this revision, the 120-day advance booking window allowed passengers to reserve tickets up to four months in advance. However, it was observed that approximately 21% of reservations made between 61 and 120 days were canceled, and around 5% of passengers neither canceled their tickets nor traveled. This led to a significant wastage of reserved seats, prompting the Indian Railways to take action to promote genuine travel intentions among passengers and improve overall ticket availability.
By shortening the advance booking period, the Indian Railways aims to enhance planning for special trains during peak seasons and reduce instances of ticket hoarding, which can prevent genuine passengers from securing seats. The decision is also expected to mitigate fraudulent activities associated with long reservation periods. Importantly, all bookings made before October 31, 2024, under the previous rules will remain valid, ensuring that existing reservations are unaffected by this change
